What Affects Lawn Mowing Cost? (And Why There's No Price List)

Lawn mowing cost comes down to how long your lawn takes to cut, week after week. The biggest drivers are lawn size, how often you mow, slopes, gates and things in the way, and extras like trimming and edging. A lawn that's let go too long also costs more on the first visit. That's why we don't post one price list. We measure your lawn and text you a real number.

Why doesn't anyone post one price for mowing?

Because no two lawns take the same time. A small, flat front lawn might take a few minutes. A corner lot with a big back yard, a hill and three flower beds takes much longer.

One flat price can't be fair to both. The small lawn pays too much. The big lawn gets rushed, or the price goes up after the first visit.

So we price each lawn on its own. We find your home on satellite images and measure the grass. Then we text your price within 60 minutes, from 7am to 8pm. Nobody visits, and you don't need to be home. Our page on how the 60-minute satellite price works shows what we look at.

Here's what moves the number up or down.

How much does lawn size change the price?

More than anything else. More grass means more passes with the mower, more turns and more edges. Lawn size is the biggest part of any mowing price.

But size isn't only square metres. The shape of the lawn matters too.

  • Open rectangles are quick. The mower runs in long, straight lines.
  • Lawns broken up by beds, trees and paths take longer. Every island means slowing down and turning.
  • Front and back yards joined by a narrow side strip add walking time.
  • Boulevard grass between the sidewalk and the road is one more small patch to cut.

Satellite images show all of this from above. That's how we can measure your lawn without a visit.

Does mowing weekly or every two weeks change the cost?

Yes, in two ways. Weekly mowing means more visits in a season. Every two weeks means fewer visits, but each one can take longer, because the grass has had more time to grow.

The reason is a simple lawn rule. Don't cut off more than one third of the grass blade at once. The City of Greater Sudbury says to cut grass to 6 to 8 cm (2.5 to 3 inches). It warns that cutting off more than one third can shock the plant and leave it open to disease and pests.

The City of Kamloops gives an easy example. If your grass is 9 cm tall, only take off 3 cm and leave 6 cm. Grass that grows past that between visits can't be cut down in one pass without stressing it.

Why does spring need more mowing than late summer?

Grass grows fastest in the cool, wet weeks of spring. The City of St. Albert says to mow about every 4 to 5 days in the growing season, and about once a week in the shoulder season.

So a lawn on a two-week plan can get shaggy in May and June. In hot, dry weeks, growth slows, and every two weeks often works fine. Our FAQ on how often to mow in Canada covers this by region.

  • Pick weekly if you want the yard sharp all the time, or your lawn is sunny and well watered.
  • Pick every two weeks for slow, shady or dry lawns, or if a little extra length doesn't bother you.

What does an overgrown lawn cost to cut?

More than a regular visit. If the grass is past your ankles, the crew can't just run the mower over it once. A thick, tall lawn clogs the deck and leaves rows of wet clumps.

St. Albert's advice for a lawn that gets too long is to double-cut it. Make the second cut across the first one, at a right angle. That's two full passes over the same ground, so it takes a lot longer than a regular cut.

If your lawn has been let go for a few weeks, say so on the quote form. A note like "it's about knee high" helps your crew plan the first visit. After that first cut, regular visits keep it short and the price steady.

Do slopes, gates and obstacles add to the cost?

They do. Anything that slows your crew down shows up in the price.

  • Slopes and hills. A steep bank is slower and harder to cut than flat ground. Some need a push mower or a trimmer.
  • Narrow gates. If a riding or wide mower can't fit, the back yard gets a smaller, slower mower.
  • Locked gates. If no one can get in, the back yard can't get cut that day.
  • Things on the lawn. Swing sets, trampolines, sheds, sandboxes and garden ornaments all need careful work around them.
  • Dogs. A dog in the yard means the crew has to wait or come back later.

Satellite images show slopes and big obstacles well. They can't always show a locked gate or a dog. A quick note on the form keeps your price accurate.

Is trimming and edging included in the price?

Every mowing visit includes a cut at the right height for the season, clippings blown off your driveway and walks, and a photo when the job is done. Trimming and edging is an add-on you pick.

A mower can't reach right up to a fence, a wall or the edge of a bed. The trimming and edging service handles those spots with a string trimmer and a clean edge along walks and beds.

What changes the cost of trimming:

  • How many metres of fence, wall and bed edge you have
  • How many trees, posts and poles stand in the lawn
  • Whether you want edges cut every visit or now and then

A lawn with lots of edges can take as long to trim as to mow. A wide open lawn with one fence line takes very little.

Does bagging the clippings cost more?

It usually does. Bagging means stopping to empty the catcher, then hauling the clippings away or bagging them for your city's pickup. Leaving them on the lawn is faster.

Leaving clippings is good for the lawn too. The City of Kamloops says mulched grass clippings can give your lawn about one third of the nutrients it needs. St. Albert says clippings disappear within 3 days after cutting, because they're full of water and break down fast.

It also keeps your green bin free. St. Albert says that in summer, up to 75 per cent of its Green Organics Carts can be filled with grass clippings.

There are times bagging makes sense, like after a long rain delay when the grass is extra tall. Your crew can tell you if your lawn needs it.

Do weather and the time of year change the price?

Weather changes the work. Wet grass clumps, so St. Albert says to mow when the lawn is dry.

If it rains on your mowing day, your crew moves the cut to the next dry day and texts you. See what happens if it rains on your mowing day for the details.

The length of your season matters too. A lawn on the coast grows for more weeks of the year than one in the north or on the Prairies. More weeks of growth means more visits in a season.

Is a season plan cheaper than booking one cut at a time?

It's simpler, and the first visit costs you nothing. The Worry-Free Lawn Season puts you on a set day, weekly or every two weeks, with the same crew every visit. The season is paid up front, and your first cut is free when you book it. Golden Oak pays your crew for that cut, not you.

Regular visits also keep the grass from getting long between cuts. That means no double-cut visits after a missed week. You can pause for a vacation by text. Cancel anytime and we refund half of your unused visits.

Our partner crews stick to maintenance: mowing, trimming and edging, hedges, and spring and fall cleanups. They don't spray weeds or pests. See the full list on the lawn care page, or read what moves the price of a fall cleanup.

How can you keep your mowing cost down?

  • Pick up toys, hoses and dog bones before mowing day.
  • Leave the gate unlocked, or share the code.
  • Keep pets inside while the crew works.
  • Let the clippings stay on the lawn.
  • Book weekly in spring so the grass never gets too tall.
  • Bundle trimming with mowing instead of booking it apart.

Lawn Mowing Cost Questions

Why won't you give me a price range for mowing?

A range would be wrong for most lawns. Size, shape, slopes and how often you mow change the work a lot. We measure your lawn from satellite images and text you a real price within 60 minutes instead.

Is mowing every two weeks half the price of weekly?

Not always. You pay for fewer visits, but each one can take longer because the grass is taller. In spring, a two-week lawn may need extra work to cut it down safely.

Do I need to be home for the quote or the cut?

No. We price your lawn from satellite images, so nobody visits. On mowing day, just leave the gate open. Your crew texts you a photo when the job is done.

Does the price go up if my lawn is overgrown?

The first visit can cost more, because very tall grass may need two passes. Tell us on the quote form if it's been a while. After that, regular visits keep it short.
