Red Deer sits on the Red Deer River, about halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. The City's drinking water comes from that river. In low rain or drought, the City says, supply can get tight, and the watering rules step up.
The shortest season in our Alberta list
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for the airport, south of the city, put the last spring frost around May 23. The first fall frost comes around September 11. That's about 110 frost-free days. A second station on the city's north side logged about 120.
Some years run tighter still. In about 1 year in 10, the airport's last spring frost comes on or after June 12, or the first fall frost arrives by August 23. Your crew plans the first and last cut around the real weather.
Wet summers, heavy clay
June and July are the wettest months at the airport, with about 94 mm each. The City says Red Deer soil ranges "from black loam to heavy clay." A 1951 soil survey puts the area in Alberta's Black soil zone, the parkland belt.
Clay packs down and stays wet. The City suggests aerating compacted clay, and a careful crew won't mow it when it's soaked.
How the City says to mow
Red Deer's tips: mow to 2.5 to 3 inches, not short. Follow the one-third rule, and mow every 5 to 7 days in the growing season. Leave the clippings on the lawn, and sweep any off the street so they stay out of storm drains. Water early in the morning, about 1 inch a week.
Red Deer rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Community Standards Bylaw (3669/2021) says grass can't go over 15 cm. The City can direct you to fix it by a deadline, then do the work if you don't. Letting a nuisance like unkempt grass sit can bring a $200 fine.
- Watering. Stage 1 limits run every year from May 1 to October 1. Sprinklers run 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. for 1 hour, on odd or even days to match your address. Stage 1 is voluntary. Stage 2 brings fines.
- Green Cart. Grass, leaves and trimmings go in. It's picked up weekly from early April to mid-November. Extra yard waste goes out beside a full cart in paper bags under 25 kg.
- Hedges by the sidewalk. Branches over a sidewalk need 225 cm of clearance. On a corner lot, keep the sight area under 90 cm.
- Elm. The City says to prune elms only from October 1 to March 31.
