What the Best Landscaper in Lethbridge Knows About Wind and Coulees

Lethbridge overlooks the Oldman River, which runs through a valley about 100 metres deep. The City's nature centre guide says the coulees along it seem to line up with the strongest winds. That wind shapes every lawn in town.

A dry, windy season

Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for the airport put the last spring frost around May 20. The first fall frost comes around September 17. That's about 119 frost-free days.

Rain and snow add up to only about 380 mm a year, and June gets the biggest share. The wind averages about 18 km/h and blows most often from the west, every month of the year.

Chinooks and dry slopes

The same City guide says Chinooks bring fast temperature swings, melting snow, moisture loss and strong warm winds all winter. It also says south-facing slopes get the hottest sun and the dry wind, so they're "quite desert-like."

If your yard slopes to the south, it may dry out first. A crew that knows this leaves the grass a little taller there.

How the City says to mow and water

The City says the ideal height for most southern Alberta grass is 7.5 to 10 cm. Taller grass shades the soil and holds moisture. Leave the clippings on the lawn. Water before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to lose less to evaporation. And watch the wind. The City says it can carry away most of the water meant for your lawn.

Near a coulee, go easy with the hose. The City's guide says coulee slumping is often tied to nearby homes and lawn watering.

Lethbridge rules that touch your lawn

Unsightly yards. The Unsightly Property Bylaw (5630) compares your yard with others within one block. It sets no grass height. After an order, the City can do the work and add the cost to your taxes.
Foxtail barley. The City says to mow it before it seeds, usually around May or June. Mowing after that spreads the barbed seeds.
Watering. Right now the City asks for voluntary savings only. If rationing starts, Stage 1 allows up to 2 hours on your cart day, before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
Green cart. Grass, leaves and small branches go in, loose or in paper yard bags. No plastic bags, even "compostable" ones. It's picked up weekly from May to October.
Yard waste sites. Three City sites, on the west, north and south sides, take yard waste in paper bags from April to mid-November.
Elm. Alberta bans elm pruning from April 1 to September 30.
