What the Best Landscaper in Saskatoon Knows About River City Lawns

Saskatoon is Saskatchewan's largest city. It sits on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River, which flows north. The west bank is low and the east bank is higher. The Meewasin Trail runs more than 105 km along both sides.

Old lake-bottom soil

A 1978 soil survey describes the Saskatoon Plain as an old glacial lake bed, sandy in some spots and clayey in others. The river has cut nearly 60 m down into it. Silty loams cover much of the plain, and heavy clays show up near the city.

The same survey puts the area in the Dark Brown soil zone. That's the belt between the dry short-grass prairie and the wetter parkland. In newer subdivisions, USask Gardening notes, yards often get just a few inches of topsoil over packed clay. Mowing on wet clay leaves ruts, so a good crew waits for it to dry.

A short season with a hot stretch

Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for the airport put the last spring frost around May 21. The first fall frost comes around September 15. That's about 117 frost-free days. About 1 year in 10, the last spring frost comes on or after June 7.

June is the wettest month, with about 66 mm. July highs average about 25°C, and the city gets about 13 days a year over 30°C. That's why weekly lawn mowing fits early summer best.

The City's own lawn advice

Saskatoon's lawn guide says to keep grass 2 to 4 inches tall, since taller lawns handle stress better. Cut when it's dry, and leave the clippings. Water deeply, but not more than once a week. In fall, mow dry leaves into small bits that break down over winter.

Saskatoon rules that touch your lawn

• Long grass. Bylaw 8175 says grass or weeds over 20 cm are overgrown. A first ticket is $250, or $200 if paid within 14 days. The City can also do the work and add the cost to your taxes.
• Watering. There's no set watering schedule. The City can declare limits if the water supply runs short. It suggests 1 to 1.5 inches a week, and you can measure with a tuna can.
• Green cart. Yard waste goes in loose, with no plastic bags. Pickup runs every two weeks, then monthly from December to March.
• Compost Depot. Free for residents at Highway 7 and 11th Street. It takes leaves, grass, sod and branches that aren't elm. In 2026, it opened April 13.
• Elm. Saskatchewan bans elm pruning from April 1 to August 31. Elm wood goes to the landfill, not the cart or depot.
