What New Brunswick Homeowners Should Know
Three cities, three short seasons
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for each city's airport station tell a clear story:
- Fredericton: last spring frost around May 17, first fall frost around September 25. About 130 frost-free days, and the warmest July of the three.
- Moncton: frost-free from about May 22 to October 4, or 134 days. It also gets the most snow, about 325 cm a year.
- Saint John: frost-free from about May 16 to October 2, or 138 days. It's the wettest of the three, at about 1,296 mm a year, with the coolest July.
What that means for your lawn
The frost-free window is only four to five months. So the spring cleanup and first cut come fast once the snow goes, and the last cut comes soon after the leaves drop. Book your spring and fall cleanup early.
All that rain keeps grass growing through July and August. Skip a week, and it gets long fast. Wet weeks also mean rain delays. When rain hits your day, your visit moves to the next dry day and we text you. It doesn't count as a miss.
Lawn pesticide rules
On December 16, 2009, New Brunswick banned the sale and use of more than 200 over-the-counter lawn pesticide products. Home lawn products with 2,4-D were banned too. Lawn care companies that do spray need a provincial licence and a permit, and blanket spraying isn't allowed.
