What the Best Landscaper in St. Albert Knows About the Sturgeon Valley
St. Albert sits on Edmonton's northwest edge, along the Sturgeon River. The City calls it the Botanical Arts City, and it manages over 60,000 trees. Lots of trees means lots of leaves come fall.
A longer season in town
St. Albert has no Environment Canada climate normals station of its own. The closest one with frost records is Edmonton City Centre, about 10 km southeast. Its normals (1981 to 2010) put the last spring frost around May 9 and the first fall frost around September 22. That's about 135 frost-free days.
Stations outside the city show a shorter window. The Edmonton International Airport station, about 36 km south, logs about 110 frost-free days. So your crew plans the first and last cut around the real weather.
Summer storms and hail
July is the wettest month at the City Centre station, with about 94 mm. The Canadian Encyclopedia says central Alberta sees about 56 hail days a year, worst in July and August. If a storm leaves shredded leaves and broken twigs, a cleanup visit can clear them.
Black soil over sticky clay
Alberta's soil atlas puts St. Albert in the Black soil zone. A 1962 survey of the Edmonton area found the glacial till underneath is mostly clay loam that drains slowly and gets sticky. So crews skip soggy days to avoid ruts.

- Elm. A City bylaw bans elm pruning from April 1 to September 30.
