What Alberta Homeowners Should Know
A short, dry season
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) show how little time an Alberta lawn gets. Here are four airport stations:
- Red Deer: frost-free from about May 23 to September 11. That's about 110 days.
- Grande Prairie: about May 17 to September 12, or 117 days.
- Lethbridge: about May 20 to September 17, or 119 days, with only about 380 mm of rain and snow a year.
- Medicine Hat: about 323 mm a year, the driest of the four. Its frost dates come from a shorter record: about May 13 to September 25.
What that means for your lawn
The south is dry, and every Alberta city has a short frost-free window. So each week of growth counts. A good crew keeps the mower set high in dry spells and never scalps the lawn. Weekly lawn mowing through June keeps up with the spring rush. Every two weeks can work once it dries out.
Chinooks in the south
A chinook is a warm, very dry wind that comes down off the mountains. When one blows in, temperatures can jump and snow seems to vanish. In southern Alberta, chinooks often clear the snow off the land in winter. That's one more reason a spring cleanup pays off. It clears what the winter left behind before the first cut.
No weed and feed
Since January 1, 2010, weed and feed products (fertilizer mixed with weed killer) can't be sold or used in Alberta. Spot weed treatments are still allowed. Golden Oak partner crews don't spray at all. They mow, trim and clean up.
