Thunder Bay sits on Lake Superior, and the City's drinking water comes from it. From Hillcrest Park, you can see the harbour, the grain elevators and the Sleeping Giant. Your lawn lives next to a very big lake.
Frost can show up in June
Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 climate normals skip Thunder Bay, so we use its older 1971 to 2000 set. At the airport, those count about 10 frosty nights in an average May. June still gets about one frosty night every two years.
The airport hit -2.8°C on June 7, 1949, and -1.1°C on August 29, 1976. Frost comes back in fall, with about 5 frosty nights in September and 18 in October. So your crew doesn't rush the first cut, and it plans a fall cleanup before the snow.
Late snow, then a steady summer
About 13 cm of snow still sits on the ground at the end of March, on average. It's usually gone by the end of April. The airport gets about 188 cm of snow a year, and July averages 17.6°C.
June to September each bring about 86 to 89 mm of rain, so grass keeps growing all summer.
Grass clippings stay on the lawn
The City's leaf and yard program doesn't take grass clippings. It asks you to leave them on your lawn instead. So your crew mows often enough that the clippings stay short and settle into the grass. Weekly lawn mowing makes that easy.
Thunder Bay rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Clean and Clear Yards By-law (BL 93/2022) says turfgrass on private land can't go over 20 cm. If you don't cut it, the City can, and the cost goes on your tax roll. Lots over 2.43 hectares are exempt.
- Boulevards. Under By-law 8-2025, you keep the City boulevard next to your home clean and its grass at 200 mm or less. Boulevard gardens are allowed once you sign the City's agreement.
- Leaf pickup. Two days each spring and two each fall, on your recycling day. Fall 2026 runs Oct. 6 to 16 and Nov. 3 to 13.
- Bags and bundles. Kraft paper bags only, each under 18 kg (40 lb). Tie branches in bundles under 1 m long and 61 cm around. There's no limit on how many.
- Missed pickup. Take leaves, shrubs and branches to the compost area at the landfill on Mapleward Road.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
