What Makes the Best Landscaper in St. Catharines Different
This strip of land is special. A 1989 federal soil survey of Niagara says the fruit belt, between the escarpment and the lake, is probably better suited to tender fruit and grapes than anywhere else in Ontario. Lawns feel that mild climate too.
Almost six months without frost
Environment Canada normals (1981 to 2010) for the St. Catharines airport station put the last spring frost around April 24 and the first fall frost around October 21. That's about 179 frost-free days. The record there ends in 2000, so treat it as a guide.
The Vineland station nearby shows a similar pattern: April 26, October 18 and about 174 days. Either way, your crew needs a plan that runs from April well into fall.
Sand here, clay there
The soil survey didn't map the built-up city. It did map the lake plain around it. There, deep lake sands carry most of the tender fruit, while reddish clay soils sit only a metre or two over shale.
Sandy yards dry out first. The City's water-wise brochure warns that after four weeks of drought with no water, grass crowns may wither and die, especially in sandy soil.
Cut at 6 to 8 cm
The City's gardening tips say to keep lawns at 6 to 8 cm for deep roots, and to leave clippings on the lawn. A lawn needs about 2.5 cm of water a week. In a long dry spell, one weekly soak can save it.
The City also suggests drought-tolerant fescues and perennial ryes. Weekly lawn mowing at the right height does the rest, and hedge trimming keeps fence lines neat.
St. Catharines rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Maintenance of Grasses and Weeds By-law says grass and weeds at 20 cm or higher must be cut. That covers your lawn and the boulevard next to it. Miss the deadline, and the City cuts it and bills you.
- Yard waste. Niagara Region picks it up weekly, all year, with no limit on bags. Use paper leaf and yard bags or a container, out by 7am.
- Size limits. Twigs in bags must be under 1.5 cm across and 30.5 cm long.
- Branches. Bundles up to 1.5 m long and 22.7 kg go out in the spring collection (May 4 to 29) or fall collection (October 26 to November 20).
- Grass clippings. Not taken in yard waste. Leave them on the lawn, or take them to a landfill free.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
