What the Best Landscaper in Hamilton Should Know About Your Lawn
Hamilton lawns are not all the same. The Niagara Escarpment splits the city in two, and the City's own rural plan says the two sides are very different. Your grass feels that too.
The Mountain wakes up later
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) show it. At the airport in Mount Hope, the last spring frost comes around April 29 and the first fall frost around October 14. That's about 167 frost-free days.
The Royal Botanical Gardens station, about 135 metres lower near the harbour, logged about 177. Its record is less complete, but lower city lawns often need their first cut a little sooner.
Clay under your feet
A 1965 federal soil survey found a wide clay plain above the escarpment. It covers most of the old townships of Barton, Saltfleet, Binbrook and Glanford. That's roughly the Mountain, upper Stoney Creek, Binbrook and Mount Hope today.
The survey says this clay drains slowly and gets very sticky when wet. So a good crew waits for a dry window. Wet grass clumps, and heavy mowers rut soft clay.
How short to cut
The City's advice: set the mower at about 6 to 7.5 cm (2.5 to 3 inches), and never take off more than one third of the blade at once. In spring, grass can need a cut every four to five days. By late summer, once a week is usually enough.
That's why weekly lawn mowing is the default here, with spring and fall cleanups on each end.
Hamilton rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Yard Maintenance By-law (10-118) says grass and weeds can't go over 20 cm (8 inches). If an order isn't met, the City can do the work and charge a fee.
- Watering. Under the Water Works By-law (23-235), you water every other day. Even house numbers water on even dates, odd numbers on odd dates.
- Yard waste. Use brown paper yard waste bags or an open-top bin with free City stickers. No plastic bags. Keep each under 50 lb, and bundle branches under 9 cm across.
- Winter break. Curbside yard waste pickup usually stops from early December to early March. Community Recycling Centres take it free, all year.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
