6 Hedge Trimming Questions to Ask
Ask any crew these. A good one answers fast and plain.
1. When is the best time to trim my hedge?
Most hedges put on a big burst of growth in late spring. A trim once that growth slows keeps the shape through summer. Fast growers may need a second light trim later in the season. Your crew won't do heavy trimming late in fall, since new shoots can get hit by frost.
2. What do you do about bird nests?
Hedges are a favourite spot for nests. Under federal rules, it's against the law to damage or disturb a migratory bird nest that holds a live bird or an egg. A good crew checks first. If there's an active nest, they leave that section for later.
3. How far will you cut it back?
Cedars and many evergreens rarely grow back from bare brown wood inside the hedge. So a crew should trim into the green, not past it. If your hedge has grown far too big, ask about a slow cutback over a few seasons.
4. Will you keep the top narrower than the bottom?
It sounds fussy, but it matters. A hedge that's a little wider at the base lets sun reach the lower branches. A top-heavy hedge goes thin and bare near the ground.
5. Who cleans up the clippings?
