What the Best Landscaper in Kelowna Plans For
Kelowna sits in the rain shadow of the Coast Mountains. A provincial soil survey says moist Pacific air drops its rain on those peaks before it gets here. What's left is hot, dry summers.
A shorter season than you'd think
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for Kelowna Airport show the last spring frost around May 10. The first fall frost arrives around September 28. That's only about 140 frost-free days.
The airport sits north of downtown at about 430 metres. Summers there are hot. July afternoons average about 28°C, and the whole year brings about 387 mm of rain and snow.
Silty ground in Glenmore and the Mission
The same soil survey found old glacial lake silts and clays near Okanagan Mission and in the Glenmore Valley. It says dry summers leave soils short on moisture, and winter frost reaches about 50 cm down.
Silty soil packs down under heavy traffic. A good crew changes its mowing pattern and skips a soaked lawn.
Tall grass, deep water
The City's tips: let grass grow to about 2.5 inches, keep mower blades sharp and leave the clippings. Its lawn factsheet says most lawns do best at 6 to 9 cm. Water deep and not too often. It also says grass naturally goes brown in summer.
That's the plan behind our weekly lawn mowing, with spring and fall cleanups to open and close the season.
Kelowna rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Noxious Weed and Grass Control Bylaw (No. 8133) says grass can't grow past 8 inches (20.32 cm). If an owner ignores an order for 10 days, the City can do the work and charge it to the property taxes.
- Clippings on the road. The Good Neighbour Bylaw (No. 11500) bars pushing grass cuttings or leaves onto the street.
- Watering. Kelowna has four water providers, so check yours. For City water in a normal year, odd addresses water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and even addresses Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Hand-moved sprinklers run 6 to 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to midnight. Timers run midnight to 6 a.m.
- Yard waste. The regional district's cart comes every other week from March 1 to December 31. No bags of any kind, and no sod or dirt. Extra loads can go to the Glenmore Landfill, which turns most yard waste into GlenGrow compost.
- Pesticides. The Pesticide Use Regulation Bylaw (No. 9920) bans most pesticide use on home lawns, including most weed and feed. Our partner crews don't spray at all.
