Fredericton is a river city with over 900 hectares of parkland. Summers run warm here. But fall frost shows up early.
Warm summers, early frost
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) cover the airport. July averages 19.3°C, the warmest of the three New Brunswick cities we serve. Yet the first fall frost comes around September 25.
The last spring frost comes around May 17. That's about 130 frost-free days. Those frost dates come from a less complete record, so use them as a guide. There's also about a 1 in 10 chance of frost on or after June 4.
No height rule, and No Mow May
Fredericton's Unsightly Premises By-law (S-16) doesn't set a grass height for private yards. The City says so itself.
The City has also tried No Mow May, skipping May mowing on some City land to help pollinators. If you can't skip May, it suggests a higher blade or fewer cuts. It also says to wait until it's steadily above 10°C before a spring cleanup. Your crew can plan your spring cleanup around that.
Water from under downtown
City tap water comes from 10 wells. They draw from a sand and gravel aquifer under downtown. There's no set lawn watering schedule. The City's tips: water early morning or late evening, and 2 to 3 cm a week is plenty.
Taller grass shades the soil and holds water better. So in a dry spell, your crew leaves your lawn mowing height a notch higher.
Fredericton rules that touch your lawn
- Yard waste pickup. About once a month, April to November, in the last full week of the month. Set it out by 7am on your garbage day. Fall 2026 weeks: September 21 to 25, October 26 to 30 and November 16 to 20.
- Leaves. Compostable paper bags only. Loose leaves and plastic bags stay behind. Don't rake leaves into the gutter.
- Brush. Tie it in small bundles with natural twine. Keep pieces under 5 cm across and 1.5 m long.
- Drop-off. The Municipal Soil Management Facility on Beek Court takes leaves, grass clippings and branches under 8 cm. It's open 24/7 from April to November.
- Watering. No set schedule, but the City is planning rules for a water shortage. Check before a dry spell.
- Weed spraying. New Brunswick banned more than 240 store-bought lawn pesticide products in 2009. Our partner crews don't spray.
