The City's plan says its 42 square kilometres hold steep slopes, silt bluffs and farmland. Lawns here range from flat lots near the beaches to hillside yards up the benches.
Frost dates and summer heat
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for Penticton Airport show the last spring frost around April 29. The first fall frost comes around October 6. That gives about 159 frost-free days.
July afternoons average about 28.7°C. July and August bring only about 29 and 28 mm of rain. A normal year's total is about 346 mm, rain and snow together.
A drought year
The City says Penticton got less than 30% of its normal rain and snow this year. It called the Penticton area the hardest hit in the Okanagan. By July 1, Okanagan Lake sat at its lowest level for that date since 1992.
June data showed the city cut water use by about 13%, short of the 20% goal.
Cut it long, water it deep
The City's advice is simple. Keep grass above 2.5 inches so it holds water. Mow once a week and never take more than the top third. Leave the clippings. A healthy lawn needs only 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water a week.
That's how weekly lawn mowing works here. Good trimming and edging matters too, because the bylaw wants leaves and clippings off walks and lanes.
Penticton rules that touch your lawn
- Untidy yards. The Good Neighbour Bylaw (No. 2012-5030) bans a build-up of dead landscaping, weeds or other growth. It sets no lawn height. After a notice, you get 14 days to fix it, or the City can do the work and add the cost to your taxes.
- Boulevards. Owners cut the boulevard turf, keep shrubs and ornamental grasses there under 0.5 m, and clear leaves and clippings off walks and lanes.
- Mowing hours. No motorized lawn or garden tools from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Watering. In a normal year, Stage 1 runs May 1 to August 31. Odd addresses water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Even addresses water Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. No watering on Mondays. Timers run 12:01 to 6 a.m., hand-set sprinklers 6 to 10 a.m. or 6 to 10 p.m.
- Yard waste. The green cart goes out every two weeks from March to December. Put it in loose, with no bags.
- Weed spraying. B.C. requires a certificate or licence for most pesticide use on home lawns. Our partner crews skip spraying entirely.
