Three things shape a Windsor lawn: a long season, hot summers and flat, heavy clay.
A long season by the river
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for Windsor Airport put the last spring frost around April 17. The first fall frost comes around October 30. That's about 195 frost-free days.
So plan on a long run of weekly cuts.
Hot summers, tired grass
The same records show about 24 days a year above 30 °C, mostly in July and August. July's average daily high is about 28 °C.

Flat clay that holds water
A federal soil survey of Essex County calls it mostly a smooth clay plain. Its most common soil, Brookston clay, shows up in every township. The survey says this clay sits on level ground and drains poorly.

Leaves and clippings

- Alleys. If an alley runs behind your home, you keep your side clear of weeds and junk, up to the middle.
- Yard waste. Use paper yard waste bags, cans, boxes or an approved cart. Plastic bags get left behind. Keep each one under 20 kg (44 lb), and put leaves at the curb, not in the alley.
- Leaves in the road. Raking leaves into the street is against the law in Windsor.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
