What the Best Landscaper in Brandon Should Know About the Assiniboine Valley
The City's own plan calls the Assiniboine River a big natural feature that runs right through Brandon. It's the city's drinking water. It has also flooded, in 2011 and 2014. Here's what the river and the weather mean for your lawn.
Frost can sneak in late
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for the airport put the last spring frost around May 17. The first fall frost comes around September 14. That's about 119 frost-free days.
But those are averages. The same records show that about 1 year in 10, the last spring frost comes on or after June 7. In about 1 year in 10, fall frost arrives by August 29. So your crew watches the weather, not the calendar.
Warm Junes, hot spells
June is the wettest month, with about 81 mm of rain. July highs average about 25°C, and the city sees about 11 days a year above 30°C. Lawns grow fast in a wet June and can slow down in a hot spell. That's why weekly lawn mowing is the plan early on, and your crew adjusts later in summer.
Black soil, sand and river silt
A 1984 soil survey of the Brandon area found mostly black prairie soils. East of the city, it found sand and gravel, part of the old Assiniboine Delta. Beside the Assiniboine, the soil ranges from loamy to clayey. The land is mostly flat. The steep ground sits along the river's cut channel.

- If it's ignored. The City sends a notice with 24 hours to 15 days to fix it. After that, it can do the work and add the cost to your taxes. A ticket for an untidy yard is $100 if paid within 15 days, or $200 after.
- Quiet hours. No motorized lawn mowers in residential areas from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Watering. The City's page gives tips, not a schedule. Most lawns need about 1 inch a week. Set an empty tuna can on the lawn, and stop when it's full.
- Clippings. Grass washed into storm drains ends up in the Assiniboine, so crews blow it back onto the lawn, not the street.
