What the Best Landscaper in Sudbury Should Know About Your Lawn
Sudbury lawns grow on the Canadian Shield. The City counts 330 lakes inside its borders, more than any other city in Canada. Rock, thin soil and water shape every yard here.
A short season with a firm start
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) set the clock. At the airport, the last spring frost comes around May 17. The first fall frost comes around October 1. That leaves about 136 frost-free days.
Snow is usually gone from the ground by the end of April. That's the time for a spring cleanup, before the first cut.
June 1 is the date to know
In 2023, Council changed the Clearing of Yards By-law. Now you can let your lawn grow until June 1, to help early pollinators. From June 1 to December 1, grass has to stay under 20 cm.
You can still mow sooner. Some neighbours wait. Others want a clean lawn by the long weekend. Your crew can do either one.
Soil that had to be brought back
Mining and smelting once left much of this land bare. Since 1978, the City's Regreening Program has limed and grassed over 3,500 hectares and planted over 10 million trees. In 2022, its crew limed 4 more hectares near Coniston.
Limestone cuts the acid in the soil, and many yards still lean acidic. The City suggests a soil pH test if your lawn struggles. It also says to cut at 6 to 8 cm and never take more than one third of the blade. That's how your crew handles lawn mowing here.
Sudbury rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Clearing of Yards By-law (2009-101) says grass, weeds and plants can't top 20 cm from June 1 to December 1.
- Watering. From June 1 to the end of September, odd addresses water on odd days and even addresses on even days. It applies day and night. A first ticket can be $300.
- Hydrants. Keep plants trimmed at least one metre back from any fire hydrant.
- Yard trimmings. The City picks them up every other week, all year, with no limit. Use paper bags, twine-tied bundles or a labelled bin, each under 18 kg (40 lb). No plastic bags.
- Fertilizer. The Lawn Fertilizer By-law bans phosphorus in general lawn fertilizer, to protect the lakes.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
