The City calls the North Bay escarpment an ancient fault in the Canadian Shield. It forms the backdrop for the whole city, with the lakes below. Your lawn feels both.
A wet, snowy year
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) cover the airport. It gets about 300 cm of snow a year. At the end of March, about 18 cm still sits on the ground. By the end of April, it's gone.
September is the rainiest month, with about 115 mm. The City says spring and fall rain usually covers what your lawn needs.
Frost dates
At the airport, the last spring frost comes around May 16. The first fall frost comes around September 29. That's about 135 frost-free days. With a season that short, a missed week shows fast.
Mow high, leave the clippings
The City's tips: raise the blade to 7.5 cm (3 inches), never cut off more than one third, and mow when the grass is dry. It says clippings break down and disappear within a day or two.
That matters here. The City won't pick up grass clippings set out as garbage, so your crew can leave them on the lawn. Brown grass in summer? The City says that's just dormancy. Weekly lawn mowing keeps each cut light.

- Grass clippings. Pickup crews won't take clippings put out as garbage.
- Yard waste drop-off. Residents can bring leaves, grass and flower clippings free to the Waste Diversion Facility at 112 Patton Street, April to October. No brush and no plastic bags.
- Brush. It goes to the Merrick Landfill on Sand Dam Road, and charges apply. There's a free brush drop-off each spring.
