What the Best Landscaper in Grande Prairie Knows About Peace Country Lawns

The City says Grande Prairie sits "in the heart of the Peace Region." Lawns up here get a short season, very long June days and heavy clay. Each one changes how a crew should cut.

A short season with long days

Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for the airport put the last spring frost around May 17. The first fall frost comes around September 12. That's about 117 frost-free days.

The days make up for it. On June 21, the city gets about 17.4 hours of daylight, based on the National Research Council's sun calculator. June and July are also the wettest months, with about 76 mm of rain each.

Sun plus rain means fast grass. That's why weekly lawn mowing is the default here in early summer.

Clay that sheds water

A soil survey from 1956 maps clay loam to clay soils, called the Landry series, around Grande Prairie. It says water often runs off the top of these soils. The City's Westgate plan describes three to four metres of silty clay on the west side.

So a careful crew skips the soggy days. Heavy mowers leave ruts in wet clay, and wet clippings clump on the lawn.

Watering without waste

We found no set watering days here. But the Utility Bylaw lets Aquatera, the local utility, limit lawn watering when it needs to, so watch for its notices. Aquatera says to water between 4 and 10 a.m., because mid-day watering can lose 30% to evaporation. It also says to let grass grow longer.

Grande Prairie rules that touch your lawn

Long grass. The Minimum Property Standards Bylaw (C-1293) calls grass or weeds over 15 cm a nuisance, unless it's a naturalized area. The set fine is $1,000, and each day can count as a new offence.
Quiet hours. The Noise Bylaw (C-1103) bans power lawn mowers in residential areas from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Yard waste. Aquatera picks up grass, leaves and branches from April to November. Use clear bags under 20 kg, and bundle branches no longer than 1 metre. There's no bag limit.
Landfill. Yard waste and sod are free at the Grande Prairie Landfill when kept apart from garbage. Branches are not part of that free list.
Dandelions. They aren't a legislated weed in Alberta. The City even asks people to leave them for bees. Our partner crews don't spray at all.
