Abbotsford lawns get a long season, a soaking fall and a dry August. The ground under them changes a lot from the hills to the prairie, too.
The longest season on our B.C. list
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for Abbotsford Airport put the last spring frost around April 7. The first fall frost comes around November 1. That's about 208 frost-free days, the longest of any B.C. city we cover.
A long season means more cuts. Plan on weekly lawn mowing through spring, then a steady pace into fall.
Gravel on the hill, silt on the prairie
A 1964 soil survey of old Matsqui split the land in two. Low, flat prairie sits by the Fraser on river silt and clay. The uplands sit higher, on glacial ground.
In the south end, from Clearbrook Road west, the survey found thin silty soil over gravel and sand. It drains fast and dries out in summer. Grass there can brown fast in a dry spell.
Soaked in November, dry in August
The airport gets about 248 mm of rain and snow in November, but only about 43 mm in July. The local water utility's lawn guide says August gets just 20% of November's rain.
Its advice is simple. A lawn needs about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water a week. Mow high, around 3 inches, and never cut off more than a third. Letting grass go dormant in summer is fine too.
Why crows dig up lawns here
European chafer beetle grubs live in Lower Mainland lawns. Crows, skunks and raccoons tear up turf to eat them, mostly from October to March. City Parks staff say a healthy lawn with high mowing is the first defence.
Abbotsford rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Good Neighbour Bylaw (No. 3068-2024) says grass and weeds can't be over 10 inches tall. Piles of dead or fallen leaves aren't allowed either. If an order is ignored, the City can do the work and bill the owner.
- Boulevards. You keep the grassed boulevard in front of your home trimmed.
- Watering. Stage 1 runs May 1 to September 30. Even addresses water Saturday morning, odd addresses Sunday morning. Sprinklers run 5 to 7 a.m., hand watering 6 to 9 a.m. At Stage 2 and up, lawn watering stops.
- Yard waste. Grass, leaves, weeds and branches go in the green cart, picked up weekly. No plastic bags, and the lid must close.
- Drop-offs. Curbside homes get six free coupons a year for yard waste at Pacific Coast Renewables on Gladwin Road.
- Weed spraying. B.C. needs a certificate or licence for most lawn pesticide use, so our partner crews don't spray.
