What the Best Landscaper in Barrie Knows About Your Yard
Barrie's downtown wraps around the western edge of Kempenfelt Bay, in the Lake Simcoe watershed. Winters bring a lot of snow, and much of the ground is sandy. Both change how a lawn here should be cut.
A shorter window to grow
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for the Barrie WPCC station put the last spring frost around May 7. The first fall frost comes around October 9. That leaves about 153 frost-free days.
The same station records about 223 cm of snow in a normal year. That's a lot of weight on a lawn all winter. So the spring cleanup counts here. Your crew rakes out the mess before the first cut.
Sandy ground drains fast
A 1962 federal soil survey of Simcoe County found sand plains across much of the middle of the county. It says the Vasey sandy loam between Barrie and Orillia is open and porous, and drains well.
A study the City published for the south end, around Hewitt's, found mostly loam and sandy loam, plus a few wet, mucky spots. Soil like this dries out in a hot spell. Grass left a little taller shades it and holds water.
How high to cut, and how much to water
The City's water tips say to leave grass at least 6 cm long and to leave the clippings on the lawn. A lawn needs only about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water a week, rain included.

- Watering. The Regulatory Matters By-law (2010-036) is always in effect on City water. Odd addresses water on odd dates and even on even, from 6pm to 8am. New sod or seed can be watered for 14 days. Private wells are exempt.
- Yard waste. Pickup comes every other week, from the first full week of April to the last full week of November. Use paper yard waste bags or cans up to 120 L with handles. No plastic bags or boxes.
- Brush. Tie bundles no longer than 1.2 m (4 ft) and under 20 kg (45 lb). Limbs must be under 7 cm (3 in) across.
- Drop-off. The landfill at 272 Ferndale Drive North takes the first 100 kg of each load free.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
