What the Best Landscaper in London Watches For
London calls itself the Forest City, and it has earned the name. The Canadian Institute of Forestry named London the 2026 Forest Capital of Canada.
Trees cover about 27 per cent of the land inside the City's urban growth boundary. The City's goal is 34 per cent by 2065. More trees mean more shade on your grass and more leaves every fall.
Frost comes and goes on its own clock
Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for London International Airport put the last spring frost around May 1. The first fall frost comes around October 13. That gives about 164 frost-free days.
September is the wettest month at the airport, with about 103 mm of rain.
Gravel and sand along the Thames
A federal soil survey of Middlesex County found gravelly soils in the old glacial spillways along the Thames River. It says they hold little water because of all the sand and gravel.
The City's London Plan even has a policy area called the Byron Gravel Pits. On fast-draining ground like that, a lawn can dry out quickly. The City says one inch of water a week is enough, best given in the early morning. Watering too often grows short roots.
How often should you mow?
The City mows big parks like Springbank, Victoria and Harris Park once a week. Smaller neighbourhood parks get cut about every 10 days.
That's why weekly lawn mowing is our default in London. Add a spring and fall cleanup for the start and end of the season.
Grubs in the summer heat
The City warns that Japanese beetle grubs feed on grass roots, and the beetles peak in hot, humid weeks. Healthy, well-kept plants bounce back better, the City says.
London rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Yard and Lot Maintenance By-law (PW-15) says lawns can't pass 20 cm (8 inches). Plants near corners and driveways must stay under 0.9 m (3 feet) so drivers can see.
- Watering. The City says lawn watering may be limited to certain dates in the warmer months. Watch for municipal water alerts.
- Yard waste. Curbside pickup runs from late March to December, on your green week. Use paper yard bags, certified compostable bags or a 30 to 125 litre container, never plastic. Keep each one under 20 kg.
- Grass clippings. There's no curbside pickup for clippings. Leave them on the lawn, or drop bags at an EnviroDepot for $2.00 each.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
