What the Best Landscaper in Guelph Knows About Local Lawns
Soil, water and a short season all shape how a Guelph lawn should be cut.
A soil named after the city
Soil scientists named a whole soil type after Guelph. A 1963 federal survey of Wellington County says Guelph soils cover the rolling hills and drumlins around the city. They're mostly loam, formed from glacial till that came from limestone.
The survey calls these soils well drained, yet good at holding enough moisture. For your lawn, that means grass dries off fast after a rain. The same report warns that steep slopes erode easily, so crews take the hills slow.
Frost shows up early here
No Environment Canada normals station sits in Guelph. Two nearby ones, at the Waterloo Wellington airport (15 km southwest) and the Fergus Shand Dam (22 km north), both put the average last spring frost around May 7.
First fall frost follows around October 2 to 6. That leaves only about 150 frost-free days, so a skipped week shows.
Water comes from the ground
The City says Guelph is the largest community in Canada that relies almost entirely on groundwater. That supply refills slowly. So from April to October, an Outside Water Use Program limits lawn watering.
So every drop counts. Regular lawn mowing here leaves the clippings behind to feed the soil, and a fall cleanup can mulch leaves right in.
Guelph rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Yard Maintenance By-law ((2008)-18552) says grass and weeds can't top 20 cm (8 inches). If an owner doesn't fix it after notice, the City can do the work at the owner's cost.
- Watering. At Level 1, you can water the lawn up to four hours a day on your address day, from midnight to 9 a.m. or 5 p.m. to midnight. Even addresses use even dates, odd use odd. At Level 2, lawn watering stops.
- Yard waste. In 2026, pickup started March 30, every other week on your grey cart day. Use paper bags or labelled containers, never plastic, each under 20 kg (44 lb).
- Clippings. Curbside yard waste doesn't include grass clippings. The City says to leave them on the lawn, where they act like natural fertilizer.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
