How the Best Landscaper in Belleville Handles Clay, Rock and Drought

Belleville sits on the Bay of Quinte, at the mouth of the Moira River. The ground here is tough on grass. Some yards are heavy clay. Others have limestone close to the surface.

Clay that bakes and cracks

A 1962 federal soil survey of Hastings County found Elmbrook soils mostly around Belleville and Stirling. It says this clay drains slowly and tends to bake and crack in dry summer weather. Near the city's west edge, it mapped Sidney clay mixed with sandy loam. Water moves slowly through that clay too.

The same survey flagged serious moisture shortfalls at Belleville in July and August. A crew that mows too short in those months leaves the soil open to the sun.

Rock close to the top

Quinte Conservation says shallow limestone, with little soil on top, is common across its watershed. It says its most significant karst feature runs along the Moira River in north Belleville. Thin soil like this dries out fast.

Dry years happen

In 2025, Quinte Conservation declared a Level 3 low water condition on September 3, which means severe drought. By November 20 it eased to Level 2, and people were asked to cut water use by 20%.

Belleville rules that touch your lawn

• Long grass. The Land Maintenance By-law (2025-117), in force since July 1, 2025, says grass and weeds can't exceed 15 cm. If an order isn't met, the City can do the work and add the cost to your tax roll.
• No Mow May. The City invites you to let grass reach 4 to 6 inches in May, but you still have to follow the by-laws. Six inches is right at the limit.
• Noxious weeds. Under the City's weed control rules, these weeds and their seeds must be destroyed by June 15 each year.
• Curbside yard waste. Pickup comes twice a year, spring and fall, by zone. Use kraft paper bags, boxes, canisters or bushel baskets, out by 7am. Tie branches in small bundles.
• Depot. Drop leaves and brush free at 75 Wallbridge Crescent with proof you live in Belleville. Brush up to 2¾ inches thick and 4 feet long. No plastic bags.
• Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
