What BC Homeowners Should Know
Three climates in one province
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) show how wide the gap is. Here are three airport stations:
- Nanaimo: about 1,165 mm of rain and snow a year. The last spring frost comes around April 14 and the first fall frost around October 26. That's about 194 frost-free days.
- Kelowna: about 387 mm a year, roughly a third of Nanaimo's. Frost-free from about May 10 to September 28, or 140 days.
- Prince George: about 595 mm a year. Frost-free from about May 26 to September 5, or 101 days.
What that means for your lawn
On the Island, the season starts early and runs late. Most of Nanaimo's rain falls in winter, though. July averages only about 25 mm, so lawns there can brown out in late summer too.
In the Okanagan, dry summers are the story. A good crew mows a little higher in hot, dry weeks and never scalps the lawn. Every two weeks can be enough in a dry August.
In Prince George, the season is short. The first cut and the last cut come close together, so a spring and fall cleanup matter even more.
Watering rules come from your city
BC rates drought on a scale from 0 to 5. But the provincial level doesn't set your watering days. Your local government or First Nation does. The Province's tip: lawns need only about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water a week. If you're allowed, water once a week, in the morning or evening.
No spraying, by design
Since July 1, 2016, most pesticide use on lawns at private homes in BC needs a certificate, or a licensed company. Many BC cities have their own bylaws on top of that. Golden Oak partner crews don't spray at all. They keep your grass thick with the right lawn mowing height instead.
