What the Best Landscaper in Sarnia Watches For
Sarnia sits where Lake Huron meets the St. Clair River. A lawn near the beach and a lawn a few kilometres inland can act like two different yards.
Sand along the lake
A federal soil survey of Lambton County found dune sand along Lake Huron, from Point Edward to Bright's Grove. It's called Plainfield sand. The survey says water runs through it very fast.
Lawns on that sand dry out first in a hot spell. Mowing a little higher and leaving the clippings helps them hold on.
Clay just about everywhere else
The same survey says most of the county is level, and much of that level soil is fine in texture. The biggest soil type is Brookston clay, where water moves slowly both down and across.
After a heavy rain, those yards can stay wet. A good crew waits a day instead of rutting a soft lawn.
How long the season runs
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for Sarnia Airport put the last spring frost near April 29 and the first fall frost near October 19. That's about 172 frost-free days. The frost record there is less complete, so treat it as a guide.

- Summer watering. From June 15 to August 31, the City's water by-law sets watering days by house number, even or odd, at set hours.
- Yard waste pickup. It runs April to December, on your zone's recycling week. Use paper bags or open rigid bins with drainage holes and an X on two sides. Keep each under 22 kg (48 lb).
- What stays out. Black walnuts, acorns and brush don't go in yard waste. Brush has its own special collections.
- Leaves stay off the road. Raking or blowing leaves onto the street breaks the City's Streets By-Law.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides, so our partner crews mow and trim instead of spraying.
