A short season with a wet July
Environment Canada keeps climate normals for the Region's airport near Breslau, just east of the city. From 1981 to 2010, the last spring frost came around May 7. The first fall frost came around October 2. That's about 147 frost-free days.
The record has gaps, so treat the dates as a guide. July brings close to 100 mm of rain, the most of any month, so grass keeps growing all summer.
Sandhills under some yards
A 1971 federal soil survey of Waterloo County describes the Waterloo Moraine. Locals call it the Waterloo Sandhills. It runs north to south through the county and is mostly sand and silt.
South and west of Kitchener, the survey says erosion wore away a clay cap in many places and left fine sand on top. Sandy lawns drain fast and dry out fast. One deep soak a week beats a light daily sprinkle.
The grass you're growing
Kitchener's lot maintenance rules even name the common lawn grasses: bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass and bentgrass. These cool-season grasses grow hardest in spring and fall. That's why weekly lawn mowing is the default here, with spring and fall cleanups at each end.

Kitchener rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. Chapter 650 of the Municipal Code says owners must keep land cleared. Cleared includes removing weeds or grass more than eight inches tall.
- Watering. From May 31 to September 30, the Region's water conservation by-law allows lawn watering once a week. Your address sets the day.
- Yard waste. The Region picks it up every second week, late March to late fall. Use paper bags or an open can with a ribbon or sticker, 23 kg (50 lb) max. Plastic bags get left behind.
- Leaves. The City runs eight leaf drop-off sites, open October 9 to December 4 in 2026. Some leafy neighbourhoods also get curbside loose leaf pickup in November.
- Weed spraying. Ontario only allows certain low-risk pesticides on home lawns, so our partner crews don't spray weeds.
