The Grand River, a Canadian Heritage River, runs right through Brantford. But it was old glacial lakes that laid down the soil under your lawn. That soil decides how your grass drinks.

Sand in one yard, clay in the next

A 1989 federal soil survey of Brant County says old glacial lakes left sand deltas at Brantford. West of the city it found gravel. To the southeast, it found clay and heavy clay.

The sandy Fox soils drain fast and hold little water, so they run dry in long dry spells. The Brantford clay holds a lot of water, but rain runs off it quickly. A good crew reads which one you have. Taller grass on sand. No mowing on soaked clay.

When the season starts and ends

Environment Canada's 1981 to 2010 normals for the Brantford station don't list average frost dates. They give odds. In a middle year, the last spring frost falls around May 1 and the first fall frost around October 10. That's about 163 frost-free days.

The soil survey counts a growing season from about April 13 to November 5. So grass can keep growing into early November. A fall cleanup wraps things up once the leaves are down.

What the City suggests

Brantford says to set the mower blade at 3 inches and leave clippings on the lawn. Its water tips add: water no more than once a week, and split it into three 10-minute runs, half an hour apart. It also suggests perennial ryes and fescues over high-upkeep Kentucky bluegrass.

Weekly lawn mowing at that height is the core of the plan. Sharp trimming and edging finishes it.

Brantford rules that touch your lawn

• Long grass. The Lot Maintenance By-law (Chapter 492) says turf grass must stay below 20.32 cm (8 inches). If an owner ignores an order, the City can do the work at the owner's cost.
• Watering. Under the Water Conservation By-law (Chapter 648), in June, July and August you water only from 7 to 9am and 7 to 9pm. Odd addresses water on odd dates, even on even. New lawns under 30 days old are exempt.
• Drought ban. If the Grand River Conservation Authority declares a Level 3 drought, outdoor watering can be banned.
• Yard waste. In 2026, weekly pickup runs April 6 to September 25 (up to 10 bags) and September 28 to December 4 (up to 30 bags). Use kraft paper bags or open rigid bins under 25 kg. No plastic bags.
• Leaves and landfill. Don't rake leaves to the curb. Rocks, dirt and sod go to the Mohawk Street Landfill at 20 Morrison Road, which takes leaves and grass free.
• Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
