Why the Best Landscaper in Kingston Cuts Grass a Little Higher
Kingston is known as the Limestone City, as the City's own history page says. That stone doesn't stay in the old buildings. Across much of the area, it sits close under the lawn.
Only a few inches of soil
A 1965 federal soil survey of Frontenac County found only a thin cover of soil over limestone across much of old Kingston Township. In places it measured about 4 inches deep. In others, 12 inches.
The survey says even 12 inches of soil doesn't hold enough water for a reliable crop. Utilities Kingston says a lawn should grow on about 30 cm (1 foot) of soil that holds moisture. Where the soil is thin, yours may have less.
Brown in August isn't always dead
Utilities Kingston says grass that goes brown in a dry spell is usually dormant, not dead. Cataraqui Conservation notes that without normal rain, soil dries and cracks and lawns turn brown.
So your crew cuts at 2.5 to 3 inches, which matches Utilities Kingston's advice, and never takes more than a third of the blade. In a drought, they raise the mower deck so they don't scalp the grass.
A lake-softened season
Environment Canada normals (1981 to 2010) for the Kingston Pumping Station, right by Lake Ontario, put the last spring frost around April 25. The first fall frost comes around October 12. That's about 169 frost-free days.
The same record gives a 1 in 10 chance of frost on or after May 5, so an early May cold snap can still happen. Weekly lawn mowing covers the long middle of the year. A fall cleanup lines up with the City's leaf pickup.
Kingston rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Yards By-law (2007-136) says turfgrass can't go over 20 cm (8 inches). If an order isn't followed, the City can do the work and bill it like taxes, with 15% interest.
- Watering. Under the Water Use By-law (2006-122), from June 15 to September 15, odd addresses water on odd dates and even on even. Sprinklers run only from 5 to 10am on your day. A hand-held hose is fine any time that day.
- New sod. A $55 permit (plus tax) allows seven days in a row of sprinkling, 5 to 10am.
- Leaves and brush. In 2026, brush pickup starts September 21 and leaf pickup starts October 26. Use paper leaf bags or rigid cans under 20 kg. Plastic bags, even compostable ones, are left behind.
- Drop-off. Yard waste goes free, year-round, to 189 Lappan's Lane.
- Weed spraying. Ontario bans most cosmetic pesticides on lawns, so our partner crews don't spray.
