Rain, Moss and August: What the Best Landscaper in Nanaimo Plans For
Nanaimo is not the rainy, green place people picture in July. It's rainy in winter and surprisingly dry in summer. Your lawn plan has to fit both.
A long season near sea level
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for Nanaimo Airport, south of the city at 28 metres, put the last spring frost around April 14. The first fall frost comes around October 26. That's about 194 frost-free days.
Compare that with about 140 at Kelowna's airport. A long season means more cuts, so weekly lawn mowing is the norm here.
Wet winters, and summers drier than parts of the Okanagan
More than three quarters of the airport's yearly 1,165 mm falls from October to March. June, July and August add up to only about 97 mm.
The Regional District of Nanaimo says the area gets less summer rain than parts of the Okanagan. Its advice: water deep but not often, and let the lawn go golden in summer. It turns green again with the fall rain. Its lawn guide says a lawn needs at most 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water a week, rain included.
Why moss moves in
Moss likes shade, wet soil and thin grass. Nanaimo's long, wet winters give it a head start. Our crews don't spray it. What helps is steady mowing at a good height, clean edges and a fall cleanup that gets wet leaves off before winter.
Nanaimo rules that touch your lawn
- Overgrowth. The Property Maintenance and Standards Bylaw (No. 7242) says owners must clear noxious weeds and brush or overgrowth that becomes a nuisance. That includes hogweed, knotweed and Scotch broom. If it isn't fixed, the City can do the work at the owner's cost. It sets no grass height.
- Watering. In Stage 2, May to September, even addresses water on even dates and odd addresses on odd dates, 7 to 10 a.m. or 7 to 10 p.m. In late September 2026 the City was at Stage 3, asking for lawns once a week: odd addresses Monday, even Thursday.
- Green cart. Leaves, grass and light trimmings go in loose. No soil or sod. Put carts out by 8 a.m., not the night before, to keep wildlife away.
- Big loads. The Regional Landfill near the city's south edge takes yard waste for $8 up to 100 kg.
- Pesticides. The Pesticide Use Bylaw (No. 7102) has banned pesticides on home lawns since April 2011. Our partner crews never spray.
