What the Best Landscaper in Cambridge Watches For
Hills, stones and river flats
A 1971 federal soil survey of Waterloo County says the Speed River joins the Grand near Preston. From there, the Grand flows over bedrock.
Around Galt, the survey found the Paris and Galt moraines. That ground is rugged, and the soil ranges from sand and gravel to stony, bouldery till. Along the Speed and lower Grand valleys, some soil is just a thin layer over dolomite rock.
For your yard, that means bumps and buried stones can scalp grass if the deck sits too low. Thin soil dries out fast in a hot spell, too.
When the grass grows
Environment Canada keeps climate normals for the Region's airport, just north of Preston and Hespeler. Its 1981 to 2010 normals show about 147 frost-free days a year. The average daily temperature climbs from 6.2 °C in April to 12.5 °C in May. The record has gaps, so treat it as a rough guide.
Grass takes off in late spring, so weekly lawn mowing is the norm in May and June. Trimming and edging keeps walks and beds sharp in between.
Rake, mulch or leave the leaves
Cambridge is a designated Bee City. The City notes that fallen leaves shelter bees, butterflies and moths over winter. It also suggests mowing leaves into fine bits that feed the soil. Your crew can do either during a fall cleanup.
Cambridge rules that touch your lawn
- Yard grass. The City says grass and weeds must not go over eight inches (about 20 cm).
- Boulevard grass. Corridor By-law 21-050 says turf grass on the boulevard beside your property can't top 20 cm.
- Watering. The Region's Water Conservation By-law 07-069 runs May 31 to September 30. Lawns get one watering day a week, based on your address, from 5:30 to 10 a.m. and/or 7 to 11 p.m.
- Yard waste. The Region collects it every second week, from late March to the end of November or early December. Tie branches in bundles no thicker than 7.5 cm and no longer than 92 cm.
- Leaves. City crews pick up leaves raked to the road, usually mid-November to early December. Bagged leaves can go to the Cambridge Waste Management Centre on Savage Drive (fees may apply).
- Weed spraying. Ontario limits home lawns to certain low-risk pesticides, so partner crews skip weed spraying.
