The City's plan says Vernon grew up and out from the valley floor onto the hillsides. It now covers 96.4 square kilometres on the shore of Okanagan Lake. Lawns here sit on everything from lakeside flats to steep grassland.
Hot, dry and hilly
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for the Vernon Bella Vista station show about 428 mm of rain and snow a year. July afternoons average about 28°C, and August brings only about 29 mm of rain. The Vernon stations don't list frost dates, so we won't guess.
Slopes add to it. The City's Foothills plan says many slopes there top a 30% grade. Water runs off a steep lawn fast.
Black soil and clay flats
A 1960 soil survey of the North Okanagan found Black soils that formed under bunchgrass, from Vernon up to Armstrong and out the Coldstream Valley. Near Swan Lake it found old lake-bottom clays with high pH and poor drainage. Clay like that drains slowly, so your crew waits for a dry day.
How to cut a thirsty lawn
The regional district's tips: keep the lawn at least 6 cm (2.5 inches) long. Mow when the grass is dry, late in the day. Keep clippings under 2.5 cm so they break down fast. Most lawns only need water once or twice a week, when watering is allowed.

Vernon rules that touch your lawn
- Untidy yards. The Good Neighbour Bylaw (#4980) bans a build-up of dead landscaping or noxious weeds. It sets no grass height for houses. After an order, you have 14 days, or the City can do the work and add the cost to your taxes.
- Boulevards and lanes. The City doesn't mow residential boulevards. You keep the boulevard and lane next to your lot trimmed and weed-free, and keep weeds out of a 1 metre strip inside your property line.
- Stratas and businesses. The Landscape Maintenance Bylaw (#5014) caps lawns at 10 cm in multi-unit and commercial zones. Homes with three units or fewer are exempt.
- Mowing hours. No motorized lawn or garden tools from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Watering. Year-round, outdoor watering is only allowed from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. In a normal year, odd addresses water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and even addresses Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
- Yard waste. The organics cart takes yard waste every week. Extra yard waste goes free to the Greater Vernon Landfill on Birnie Road, where it becomes RDNO-Gro compost.
- Weed spraying. Most lawn pesticide use in B.C. needs a certificate or licence. Our partner crews leave spraying out.
