How the Best Landscaper in Prince George Uses a Short Summer
The City's plan says Prince George covers 329 square kilometres around the Nechako and Fraser rivers. Lawns sit down in the river valley and up on the higher ground, and the two don't grow on the same clock.
101 days, give or take
Environment Canada climate normals (1981 to 2010) for Prince George Airport show the last spring frost around May 26. The first fall frost comes around September 5. That's about 101 frost-free days, with about 205 cm of snow in a normal winter.
A station lower down in the valley, about 110 metres below the airport, logged about 128 frost-free days. Its record is less complete, but valley lawns often green up sooner than yards on the hills.
Spring cleanup matters most here
After that much snow, lawns come out flat and littered with sticks and grit. A spring cleanup in May lets air and light back in. Then weekly lawn mowing keeps up with June, the airport's wettest month.
Cut tall, water smart
The City says lawns stay moist when they're cut 5 to 7.5 cm long. Tall grass shades and cools the soil, grows slower and needs less mowing. A lawn needs about 2.5 cm of water a week, which is about a half hour of sprinkling, twice a week.
The City also says evaporation is highest from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. So water in the morning or evening.
Prince George rules that touch your lawn
- Long grass. The Property Maintenance Bylaw (No. 8425) says a lawn can't grow past the standard on your street, and never past 10 inches. Dead or overgrown plants have to go too.
- Watering. Rules apply all year. Even house numbers sprinkle on even dates, odd numbers on odd dates. No sprinkling from noon to 5 p.m. (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Western Acres). The fine is $100.
- Mowing hours. The City's Good Neighbour Guide allows property upkeep noise from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Yard waste. The Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill takes leaves, grass and branches up to 75 mm across, free. The Quinn Street and Vanway transfer stations take yard waste too.
- Bears. Pick fruit as it ripens and keep it off the ground. Fruit and berries don't belong in yard waste.
- Weed spraying. B.C. requires a certificate or licence for most pesticide use on home lawns. Our partner crews don't spray.
