How Often Should I Mow My Lawn in a Canadian Summer?

Weekly for Most of the Season, With a Little Slack in Dry Spells

For most Canadian lawns, mow once a week from late spring through early summer, when grass grows fastest. In hot, dry stretches, growth slows, and every one to two weeks can be enough. The simple rule: never cut off more than one third of the grass blade at once.

Why spring needs the most mowing

Most lawns in Canada are cool-season grasses, like Kentucky bluegrass and fescue. They grow hardest in the cool, wet weeks of spring. The City of Hamilton, for one, says grass can need a cut every four to five days in spring and early summer. By late summer, about once a week is usually enough.

How short to cut

Keep it on the tall side. Hamilton's advice is a blade height of about 6 to 7.5 cm (2.5 to 3 inches). Taller grass shades the soil, holds water better and crowds out weeds. Scalping a lawn in July is the fastest way to turn it brown.

Your city changes the calendar

  • Coastal BC: the season starts early and runs late.
  • The Okanagan and the Prairies: dry summers slow growth, so every two weeks can work in August.
  • The north and the Maritimes: a shorter frost-free season, with fast growth packed into fewer weeks.
