Mowing Lawns on Clay Soil: Ruts, Timing and Wet Weeks

Mow a clay soil lawn only when the ground is firm. Clay holds water longer than other soils, and wet soil packs down under feet and wheels. That leads to ruts, puddles and thin grass. Do a quick squeeze test before you mow. Keep the grass at 6 to 8 cm (2.5 to 3 inches), change your mowing path each time, and skip the soggy corners in a wet week.

Why is a clay soil lawn harder to mow?

It comes down to the size of the bits that make up your soil. The University of Illinois Extension says soil is made of sand, silt and clay. Sand is the biggest. Clay is the smallest.

Those tiny clay bits sit close together. Illinois says clay soils have less space between them, so water moves slowly and stays put for a long time. That's why your yard can still be soft two days after a storm while the neighbour's sandy lawn is dry.

Soft ground is the problem. Rutgers University says wetter soil is more at risk of getting packed down, and clay content plays a part too. A mower and the person pushing it are a lot of weight on that soft ground.

Colorado State University says even rain and sprinklers pack the top of clay soil. So clay lawns start out a little tight before anyone walks on them.

What does mowing wet clay do to your lawn?

It squeezes the air out of the soil. That's called compaction. Cornell University says traffic on moist soil is the most common cause of it. Packed soil turns into a hard block with no room for air or drainage.

Here's what that looks like over a season:

  • Ruts. Wheels sink into soft clay and leave grooves. Rutgers lists lasting tire ruts as a sign of packed soil.
  • Bare paths. Rutgers says bare strips that follow the same route, muddy when wet and hard when dry, point to compaction.
  • Puddles that hang around. Rutgers says ponding can mean water can't soak in, either from compaction or from the clay itself.
  • Shallow roots. Colorado State says packed clay can lead to shallow roots and grass that handles stress poorly.

Ontario's agriculture ministry says a packed layer can cause drainage problems and waterlogged soil in wet years. Roots hit it like a wall. It's the same story in a backyard, just on a smaller scale.

Is one pass on wet clay really that bad?

Yes, more than most people think. The first trip does most of the damage.

Colorado State gives a clear example. It says a moist soil can reach 75% of its full compaction the first time someone steps on it. By the fourth step on the same spot, it's at 90%.

Manitoba Agriculture says the same thing about wheels. The first pass causes up to 80% of the compaction that four passes would cause on the same spot.

So "I'll just do it quick" doesn't help much. One wet mow already packs the soil. Rutgers also says wetter soil gets packed deeper, and deep compaction is harder to fix.

How do you know clay soil is dry enough to mow?

Don't go by the calendar or by how the grass looks. Check the soil itself. Here are three quick tests.

The squeeze test

Colorado State uses this to check if clay is too wet to dig. It works well before a mow too. Grab a handful of soil from a low spot and gently squeeze it into a ball. If it crumbles, the soil is dry enough. If the ball just changes shape when you press it, it's too wet.

The footprint test

Walk across the lowest part of the lawn. If your shoes leave a dent, or water seeps up around them, the mower wheels will sink too. Wait.

The puddle check

Look for standing water in the low spots. If it's still there, the soil under the rest of the lawn is likely soft as well.

Colorado State notes something every clay owner learns the hard way. On some clay soils, the gap between "too wet" and "too hard" can be just a few days, or even hours. When the clay passes the squeeze test, that's your window to mow.

How do you mow clay soil without making ruts?

A few habits go a long way:

  • Change your path every time. Iowa State says different mowing patterns cut down on soil compaction and wear from the mower wheels. Ohio State suggests going at right angles to your last pass.
  • Turn wide on the soft spots. Tight turns twist the wheels and tear the turf. Make wide, gentle turns at the ends.
  • Skip the low corner. If one spot stays wet, mow around it this week. Cut it next time when it's firm.
  • Keep heavy gear off. Rutgers says heavy equipment, mowers included, should stay off soft ground. That goes double for riding mowers on wet clay.
  • Use a sharp blade. Health Canada says grass recovers faster from a clean cut than from a tear.

Watch your foot traffic too. Colorado State says to keep everyday traffic on clay soils to set paths. Use the walkway instead of cutting across the lawn to the shed, and the grass will thank you.

What height should you mow a clay soil lawn?

Keep it on the tall side. Health Canada says grass cut at 6 to 8 cm (2.5 to 3 inches) grows a deep root system and gets thicker. On clay, deeper roots matter, since packed clay already pushes roots to stay shallow.

Don't take too much off at once. Ohio State says never remove more than one third of the blade in one cut. If you keep your lawn at 7.5 cm (3 inches), mow before it passes about 11.5 cm (4.5 inches). Our guide to how often to mow in Canada shows how that plays out over a season.

What do you do in a wet week on clay?

Wait for the ground, not just the grass. The blades can dry in a few hours of sun while the clay underneath stays soft. Iowa State says wet grass is also harder to cut, can clog the mower, and is easier to slip on.

If rain keeps you off the lawn for a week or more, the grass gets long. Ohio State has a simple fix for that:

  1. Once the soil passes the squeeze test, set the mower to its highest setting and mow.
  2. Lower the deck to your normal height.
  3. Mow again in a different direction.

That keeps you inside the one-third rule and spreads the wheel weight over two different paths. For more on wet days, read our post on mowing wet grass.

Can a mowing crew fix compacted clay?

No. Health Canada lists hard, packed ground and water that won't soak in as signs your soil needs work. That's a job for a lawn specialist, not a mowing crew. Our partner crews do maintenance only: mowing, trimming and edging, hedges, and spring and fall cleanups.

What a good crew can do is stop the damage from getting worse. That means mowing when the clay is firm, changing the path each visit and steering clear of the soggy spots. If you spot moss or weeds in the wet areas, our partner crews don't spray, and Golden Oak gives no pesticide or herbicide advice.

Who mows your clay lawn when you book with Golden Oak?

Golden Oak Lawn Care matches you with a vetted, insured local partner crew. They do the work. We stand behind it with the Golden Oak Guarantee.

The same crew handles your lawn mowing every visit. Over time they learn which corner of your yard stays wet and which path to take. Your crew texts you a photo after every cut. Rain on your mowing day? Our FAQ on what happens if it rains explains how that works.

The Worry-Free Lawn Season books the whole season up front, and your first cut is free. We price every lawn by its size from satellite images, so no one needs to visit. Lawn size, how often you want a cut, slopes, gates and obstacles all change the price.

Clay Soil Lawn Questions

How long should I wait to mow clay soil after rain?

There's no set number of hours. Clay holds water longer than sandy soil, so check the ground instead. Squeeze a handful into a ball. If it crumbles, you can mow. If it just changes shape, wait.

Why does my mower leave ruts in my lawn?

The soil was too soft when you mowed. Wet clay packs down under the wheels. Following the same path every time makes it worse, so change your direction each mow and wait for firm ground.

Is it OK to walk on a wet clay lawn?

Try not to. Colorado State says a moist soil can reach 75% of its full compaction from one step. Stick to the walkway until the lawn dries out.

What height is best for grass on clay soil?

Health Canada says 6 to 8 cm (2.5 to 3 inches) for deep roots and thicker grass. Never cut off more than one third of the blade at once.
