When to Do Your Fall Yard Cleanup on the Prairies

On the Prairies, plan your big fall yard cleanup for the second half of October. By then most leaves are down and the grass is slowing. You still beat the city deadlines. St. Albert's weekly carts end with October. Brandon's green cart season ends November 6, 2026. Red Deer, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat slow down or close in mid to late November. Wait too long and snow can bury the job.

Why does fall cleanup timing matter so much on the Prairies?

Prairie falls are short. Frost shows up early, and snow can come any week after that. You get a narrow window between "leaves are down" and "the yard is white."

Two clocks run at once. One is the weather. The other is your city's yard waste schedule. Most Prairie cities cut back pickup or close drop-off sites in November. Miss that and your leaf bags sit in the garage until spring.

Timing also matters for the lawn itself. The University of Saskatchewan says lawns left long and matted over winter get more snow mould. So does leaf litter left on the lawn in fall. Their advice is simple: cut and rake before the snow arrives. Our guide to snow mould and fall cleanup explains why.

When does grass stop growing on the Prairies?

Iowa State University Extension says cool-season grass like Kentucky bluegrass stops growing once daytime highs stay below 10°C (50°F). Keep mowing until then.

Environment Canada's climate normals show where that line falls:

CityNormal high, OctoberNormal high, November
Saskatoon10.2°C-1.2°C
Lethbridge13.7°C4.8°C

In a normal year, Saskatoon grass stops during October. Lethbridge, in the warmer south, keeps going to about the end of October or early November. Most other Prairie cities land between those two.

That's why the last mow and the big cleanup usually happen together in late October. For more on this, see when grass stops growing.

Does the first frost mean the season is over?

No. First frost comes weeks before the grass stops. Here are the normal first fall frost dates:

  • Red Deer: September 11
  • Grande Prairie: September 12
  • Brandon: September 14
  • Saskatoon: September 15
  • Lethbridge: September 17
  • Medicine Hat: September 25

So a frosty morning in September isn't your cue to put the rake away. Just don't mow frosted grass. Wait for it to melt and dry.

What are the fall yard waste deadlines in Prairie cities?

This is the clock most people forget. Here's what each city says for fall 2026:

CityFall yard waste timing
St. AlbertLeaf pickup October 27 to 30. Weekly green carts end with October.
Spruce GroveExtra organics weeks October 5 to 9 and November 3 to 6. Weekly pickup ends the week of November 10 to 13.
BrandonGreen cart season ends November 6.
SaskatoonCompost Depot usually closes in early November (November 8 last year).
Red DeerWeekly Green Carts until mid-November, then every other week.
LethbridgeYard waste drop-off sites open until mid-November (closed November 17 last year).
Medicine HatOrganics pickup ends November 20.
Grande PrairieAquatera curbside yard waste runs April to November.

See the pattern? Almost every deadline lands in the first three weeks of November. Finish the cleanup by late October and you have room for one rainy weekend.

What are the bag rules in each city?

Using the wrong bag means your leaves stay at the curb. Each city is different.

Alberta cities

  • St. Albert: paper bags or bins up to 80 L, each under 25 kg (50 lb). No plastic or compostable bags. Leaves go out by 7 a.m. Tuesday of pickup week.
  • Spruce Grove: brown paper yard waste bags during the extra weeks only. Other weeks, it has to fit in the cart with the lid shut. The Eco Centre takes up to 3 cubic metres of organics free.
  • Red Deer: extra yard waste only goes with a full Green Cart. Use paper bags under 25 kg (55 lb), out by 7 a.m. No plastic bags.
  • Lethbridge: paper bags only at the drop-off sites.
  • Grande Prairie: clear plastic bags, each under 20 kg. Aquatera puts no limit on the number of bags.
  • Airdrie: the green cart goes weekly in summer and every two weeks in winter. Extra leaves can go to the Transfer Site for a fee.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba

  • Saskatoon: the green cart goes every two weeks, then monthly from December to March. The Compost Depot takes leaves and grass free for residents.
  • Brandon: after November 6, take yard waste to Eastview Landfill. The City says organics go there free of charge, all year.

Grande Prairie's clear plastic bags are the odd one out. Everywhere else on this list, think paper.

Should you split fall cleanup into two visits?

For most Prairie yards with trees, yes. One cleanup often comes too early or too late. Two lighter visits work better.

  1. Early to mid October. Mow, rake the first heavy drop and clear the beds. In Spruce Grove, time it for the October 5 to 9 extra organics week.
  2. Late October. Do the last mow, pick up the rest of the leaves and trim the edges. Bag it all before your city's November deadline.

Iowa State notes that a thick leaf layer blocks light. The grass can't make and store food before winter, and patches can die back. Clearing leaves in two passes keeps the lawn from sitting under a mat for weeks.

If you only have one tree, one late October visit is usually enough. Watch your own trees, not the calendar. When the branches are mostly bare, it's time.

When should you trim hedges in the fall?

Hedges can go on the same visit, with one catch. Elm hedges have their own rules on the Prairies.

  • Lethbridge and St. Albert ban elm pruning from April 1 to September 30.
  • Saskatoon bans cutting or pruning elm from April 1 to August 31.
  • Saskatoon's Compost Depot won't take elm. It goes to the landfill.
  • Red Deer won't take elm branches with curbside yard waste.

So October is open season for elm hedges in those cities. For cedars and other shrubs, see our guide on when to trim cedar hedges, or book hedge and shrub trimming with your cleanup.

What goes on a Prairie fall cleanup list?

Here's what a good late October cleanup covers:

  • Walk the yard and pick up sticks, toys and hoses first.
  • Do the last mow once the grass has slowed. Our last mow guide covers the height.
  • Rake or bag the leaves off the lawn and out of the beds.
  • Trim along fences, walks and the driveway.
  • Sweep clippings and leaves off hard surfaces.
  • Bag everything to your city's rules and set it out on time.

Our full fall lawn cleanup checklist has the rest.

Can someone handle the fall cleanup for you?

Yes. Golden Oak Lawn Care matches you with a vetted, insured local crew in your Prairie city. They do the work. We stand behind it with the Golden Oak Guarantee.

Your crew can do a fall cleanup with the last cut, edges, beds and leaves. If you'd rather skip the whole season's chores, the Worry-Free Lawn Season covers regular lawn mowing from spring to fall. The same crew comes every visit and texts you a photo when the job is done.

We price every lawn by its size from satellite images. Lawn size, leaf volume, beds, slopes, gates and whether you want the bags hauled away all change the price.

Prairie Fall Cleanup Questions

When is it too late for fall cleanup on the Prairies?

Once snow covers the lawn, it's too late. Most city yard waste deadlines also land in November. Aim to finish by the end of October so you have a buffer.

Can I leave leaves on the lawn over winter?

It's risky on the Prairies. The University of Saskatchewan links leaf litter left in fall to snow mould. A light layer can be mulched with the mower. Heavy cover should be raked off.

Should I keep mowing after the first frost?

Yes, if the grass is still growing. Prairie first frost comes in September, but grass keeps growing until daytime highs stay below 10°C (50°F). Just wait for frosted grass to thaw and dry.

What if I miss my city's last yard waste pickup?

Check for a drop-off site. Brandon's Eastview Landfill takes organics free all year. Spruce Grove's Eco Centre takes up to 3 cubic metres free. Saskatoon's Compost Depot is free until it closes in early November.
