In Airdrie, grass and weeds can't grow taller than 10 cm (about 4 inches). Anything taller counts as an untidy and unsightly yard under the Community Standards Bylaw, B-09/2012. The rule also covers the City boulevard between your lot and the curb. If you don't fix it after a notice, the City can do the work, bill your taxes and fine you.

What does the Airdrie grass bylaw say?

The rule is in section 3.01 of Community Standards Bylaw B-09/2012. The City still updates it. The current version includes changes made in 2026.

Section 3.01 says no person, owner or occupant can let their land, building or the municipal boulevard become untidy or unsightly. It then lists examples. One of them is "unkempt grass or weeds higher than ten (10) centimetres."

A few details are easy to miss:

  • Owners and occupants: the bylaw names both, so renters are covered too.
  • Grass and weeds: the same 10 cm limit applies to both.
  • The boulevard: the bylaw names the municipal boulevard in the same rule.
  • Lanes: the bylaw's meaning of "land" includes parts of public lanes or streets that neighbours normally look after.

10 cm is one of the lowest limits we've seen. Red Deer and Spruce Grove allow 15 cm. Saskatoon allows 20 cm. Our guide to long grass bylaws in Canada compares more cities.

Does the 10 cm rule cover the boulevard in Airdrie?

Yes. Section 3.01 names the municipal boulevard right beside your land and buildings. The bylaw defines that boulevard as the City road land between the curb and your property line. It counts even when a sidewalk or pathway sits between your lot and that strip.

So the grass strip by the curb is part of the picture. If the strip runs long while your lawn looks great, your yard can still look untidy under the bylaw. Mow it every time you mow the front.

Why is 10 cm so easy to pass in Airdrie?

Because the gap is small. The City's water tips say to leave grass 3 inches long. That's about 7.5 cm. The bylaw limit is 10 cm, or about 4 inches. So you only have about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of room.

That's tight. Iowa State University's extension service says never remove more than one third of the leaf at once. If you cut to 3 inches, the one third rule lets the grass reach about 4.5 inches first. In Airdrie, that's already past the limit. You can't wait for the "right" length. You mow often enough that it never gets there.

When does Airdrie grass grow fastest?

Airdrie has no climate normals station of its own. The closest one is the Calgary airport, about 20 km south. Its average last spring frost is May 21. Its first fall frost averages September 16. That's about 117 frost-free days.

June is the wettest month there, with 94.0 mm of rain and snow on average. Warm days plus June rain make grass jump. With only about 1 inch of room, a missed cut in June is the most likely way to end up over the limit.

What happens if your grass is too long in Airdrie?

Municipal Enforcement handles it. The bylaw sets out the steps:

  1. A written notice. It says what's wrong and what to fix. Unless it says otherwise, you get at least 7 days.
  2. The City can do the work. The notice must say that if you don't fix it, the City may do it and charge the cost to your property as taxes.
  3. An Order to Remedy. If the deadline passes, the City can issue an order. Ignoring that order is an offence.
  4. Costs on your tax roll. The City's enforcement costs can go on your taxes as a debt. An admin fee is added on top.

You can ask the General Appeal Board to review an Order to Remedy. You have to do it in writing within 14 days of getting the order.

How much is the fine for long grass?

Schedule A of the bylaw lists the fines for an untidy and unsightly yard:

Type of fineAmount
Penalty in place of going to court300 dollars
Specified penalty500 dollars
Second conviction within 12 monthsDouble the specified penalty
Third conviction within 12 monthsTriple the specified penalty

How do you report long grass in Airdrie?

Call Municipal Enforcement at 403.948.8888. You can also send a message through the City's bylaw enforcement page. The City asks you to include the address if it's about a certain property.

Before you call, try a friendly word over the fence. Your neighbour may be away, sick or between mowers. A quick chat often fixes it faster than a notice.

When can you mow in Airdrie?

The same bylaw limits lawn mowers, trimmers and leaf blowers at night in residential areas. Night starts at 10 p.m. It ends at 7 a.m. if the next day is Monday to Saturday. It ends at 9 a.m. if the next day is a Sunday or holiday.

So an early Sunday cut before 9 a.m. breaks the rule. Plan weekend mowing for late morning or afternoon.

What do you do with all the clippings?

Here's how to handle them the City's way:

  • Leave them on the lawn: the City calls this grass-cycling. It feeds the lawn and helps hold moisture.
  • Green cart: leaves, flowers and grass clippings go in your green organics cart. Put them in loose or in a certified compostable bag.
  • Lid closed: the lid must close. Carts go out by 7 a.m. on collection day.
  • Pickup timing: green carts are picked up weekly in summer and every two weeks in winter.
  • Extra yard waste: save it for your next pickup, or take it to the Transfer Site, 7 km west on Highway 567, for a fee.
  • Swales: keep the grassy drainage channel by your home free of yard waste. Clear grass off a blocked catch basin grate too.

That last one is very Airdrie. Swale water runs into the storm system and on to Nose Creek. A pile of clippings in a swale can block the flow. Sweep clippings off the driveway and sidewalk for the same reason.

How do you stay under 10 cm all season?

  • Mow on a set day each week from late May into September.
  • In wet June weeks, think about a second cut so the grass never passes 4 inches.
  • Mow the boulevard strip by the curb every time.
  • Trim along fences, the lane side and around posts, where long grass shows first.
  • Book a backup before summer trips to the lake or the mountains.

Edges are where complaints start. The middle of the lawn looks fine while the fence line and curb strip run long. Good trimming and edging keeps those parts tidy. Our partner crews don't spray, and Golden Oak gives no advice on weed killers or other chemicals.
